The Russian International Olympic University (RIOU) has been awarded the Healthy Campus certificate from the International University Sports Federation (FISU). FISU’s global project is aimed at promoting the values of physical fitness and healthy lifestyle among students and creating a comfortable learning environment.

RIOU has become the tenth educational institution in Russia certified under this standard, along with Plekhanov Russian Economic University (Moscow), RUDN University (Moscow), ITMO University (St. Petersburg), Siberian Federal University (Krasnoyarsk), Volga Region State University of Physical Culture, Sports and Tourism (Kazan), among others.
A total of 86 universities from Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Chile, China, the USA and a number of European countries are participating in the project, including internationally recognised educational institutions such as King's College London (UK) and Peking University (China).
To obtain the FISU Healthy Campus Label, universities must meet 100 criteria grouped into 7 domains:
- fitness and sport opportunities within the curriculum, organisation of physical activity for applicants and graduates, accessibility of sporting infrastructure for people with disabilities, sports volunteering;
- nutrition;
- disease prevention;
- reducing stress during the learning process, assessment of students' mental and social health;
- risk behaviour – prevention programmes to address potential threats that may affect the students’ well-being;
- creating an eco-friendly and accessible environment, ensuring sustainability, promoting socially responsible behaviour among students;
- Healthy Campus management, roles and responsibilities and other aspects of the programme implementation.
Certification by the world’s leading organisation in the field of university sport once again underlines that the learning environment at RIOU meets the highest international quality standards. In 2025, the Olympic University will open its doors to a new cohort of students, who can choose from a variety of Master programmes. Candidates can apply for RIOU scholarships to study on its flagship international MSA course, or for special grants targeting athletes.

Background information: RIOU’s campus is located in the centre of Sochi, spanning a total area of 16,400 square metres. All lecture rooms are equipped with multi-purpose multimedia systems. Free Wi-Fi covers all the premises, with videoconferencing opportunities. The RIOU campus complies with the IOC’s environmental requirements, the international BREEAM standards and is fully accessible for people with disabilities.
